Acne Treaments

I have a friend I would like to tell you about. We will call her Jenny. Jenny and I did a lot of the same things. We hung out with the same friends, wore the same cloths, ate at the same times and places, and even had the same work-out schedule. But there was one thing our routines didn’t have in common. I washed my face morning and night, and she didn’t. So why did I have acne and she didn’t?

I Know it’s Frustrating

What I am saying is trust me. I know you have tried everything. I know how you feel You have tried over the counter zit-be-gone’s, herbal treatments, a facial mask your grandma told you to use, and plenty of infomercials have convinced you to buy their product. I too tried everything under the sun before I found something that worked. I tried all kinds of soaps, creams, pills and even changed my eating habits. Now I am not saying all of these remedies are bad. In fact- some mentioned might be the very thing you need.

It seems like everyone has a different remedy, or some kind of cure for your acne. I even heard once that if I ate cabbage daily and rubbed lemons on my face at night, I could expect it to clear up… no comment.

Here is the problem. We all have different skin types. One acne treatment may have worked for your cousin, but wont work for you. My friend Jenny and I obviously have different skin- so why would I resort to her practice of not washing her face just because she has clear skin?

Different Skin Types

Lets start with the basic foundation of finding the right treatment for you. Not all products will work well for your skin type. Listed below are 5 basic skin types, if you do your research you will find that these 5 are broken down even more. I suggest that after this simple test you do more research to find your exact skin type.

If you don’t know your skin type, there is a simple way to find out. In the morning when you first wake up, before you wash your face or shower, wipe your face with a clean facial tissue or paper. Make sure you wash your face the night before.

Normal Skin: The paper will not leave any traces of oil. Your skin should feel elastic and vibrant. Normal skin is the least problematic. It will look great even with minimum care (Jenny).

Dry Skin: If your skin is dry, it will also leave a clean paper/tissue but your skin will feel flaky and tight after you wipe it.

Oily Skin: If your skin is oily the paper/tissue will have spots have facial oil on it corresponding to your cheeks, nose and forehead.  Oily skin is problematic.

Combination Skin: The paper will have traces of oil on it from your forehead and nose (also known as the T-zone), but the paper will stay clean when wiped on your cheeks. This skin type is common for most women.

Sensitive Skin: Will react the same as the it would if it were dry skin. Sensitive skin is extreme though. Typically, sensitive develops reddish and scaly areas, can be itchy and tingly, and is prone to breaking into spots. It is the most problematic.

Solutions For Your Skin Type

You may be treating the wrong skin type! Below are generally the different types of solutions, and the types of skin they work with.

Alcohol Solutions- oily  *Beware of alcohol solutions, they can be known to increase the possibility acne scaring

Gels- normally to oily *Bruunhause acne gel, or gel’s with tea tree oil

Aqueous Solutions- normal to dry *water based products are known to have the least amount of irritation.

Lotions- any

Creams- normal to oily

Ointments- normal to dry

Foams- normal to oily

Sadly, there is no cure all for everyone. But there are still things that are good for everyone, no matter your skin type. Although acne is not always tied to personal hygiene, you can be sure it wont increase your acne problem. Make sure you get a soap that is appropriate for your skin type and wash your face daily.

Dr Leslie Baumann, author of The Skin Type Solution, said, “The skin cells that flake off the skin clog the hair follicle or pore. This leads to a black head or a white head. Oil or sebum makes this clogging worse. Bacteria move in to eat these dead cells and release inflammatory factors that cause redness and pus”. This is also why I would recommend exfoliating often. This will help get rid of those dead skin cells and prevent them from clogging your pores.

There are so many different acne treatments out there, make sure you know your skin type, and treat it appropriately!
